Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are devices worn inside shoes to help correct foot and ankle problems that cause chronic or recurrent symptoms, including issues affecting stability and balance. Orthotics can also help relieve painful symptoms in the knees, hips, and back. Made of a variety of materials and encompassing rigid, semi-rigid and soft designs, custom orthotics are created based on the patient's specific needs and unique foot shape for long-term relief of issues like:

  • bunions
  • nerve-related problems (including neuropathy and neuroma)
  • hammertoes
  • corns and calluses
  • plantar fasciitis
  • heel spurs
  • flat feet and other arch-related problems
  • foot problems related to diabetes and other chronic diseases

How do custom orthotics compare to over-the-counter inserts I can buy in a drugstore?

Custom orthotics are designed for each individual patient based on their foot shape and their medical needs, offering long-term relief for pain and other symptoms while also promoting a normal gait and better mobility. Over-the-counter products are designed for the general public based on very broad concepts and design principles and cannot provide custom support. As a result, many mass-produced orthotics products can mask underlying issues, delaying care and allowing these issues to develop into more serious conditions. In addition, custom orthotics are designed using high-quality materials designed to last, which means that over time, they can be a much more economical solution.

How are custom orthotics made?

Custom orthotics rely on a series of careful measurements of the patient's foot as well as a thorough evaluation of their gait, foot shape, and any underlying problems to determine pressure points and other issues that may be contributing to a foot or ankle problem. Measurements can be made manually and using computerized assistance to ensure the most accurate results. Once all the data have been gathered, the information is sent to a lab where the orthotics are created using the highest-quality natural and synthetic materials for a comfortable fit and exceptional durability. Custom orthotics can be created for nearly all types of shoes, including sandals and athletic shoes.
